LG TVs let you enable a Developer Mode through the LG Content Store, which allows sideloading apps via ares-install. Two apps worth installing:

youtube-webos is an actively maintained fork that replaces the stock YouTube app with one that blocks ads, integrates SponsorBlock, and adds features like Return YouTube Dislike, force max quality, and customizable themes. The official YouTube app needs to be uninstalled first.

Moonfin is an enhanced Jellyfin client built with LG’s Enact framework. It supports multi-server unified libraries, Jellyseerr integration for requesting content, and hardware-accelerated playback through the native webOS media pipeline.

If you want to keep Developer Mode alive without opening the app all the time, you can refresh the session directly with LG’s endpoint: curl "https://developer.lge.com/secure/ResetDevModeSession.dev?sessionToken=YOUR_TOKEN". You can get that token from the TV itself with ssh webos -T cat /var/luna/preferences/devmode_enabled, then use the value as the sessionToken in your automation.

If you want a simpler way to browse and install community apps directly on the TV, the webos-homebrew-channel is worth installing too.

If you’re on Nix, the ares-cli tools are available in nixpkgs, so you can sideload apps without installing the webOS SDK globally:

nix-shell -p ares-cli
ares-install -d tv ~/Downloads/youtube.leanback.v4_0.7.3_all_webOS22+.ipk
